Rhino was the first app approved by HMRC for its Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative.
The Rhino Small Business App was first to be accredited by HMRC for its Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative. That’s great news for small businesses looking to reduce the burden and cost of accounting fees and tax bills.
The approval from HMRC – the first for any software package designed for business owners – means that Rhino users can submit their business accounts directly from the App to the online MTD portal. (That portal went live on 15th March 2018.)
As you might expect, the App integrates directly into the Making Tax Digital platform. Rhino was the first accounts package approved by HMRC that allows a business to submit its own returns. That direct access for HMRC updates just requires a few clicks, making return submissions easier, faster and cheaper for our user base of sole traders, small and medium-sized businesses.
We worked closely with HMRC to help design and build the new MTD platform while developing the Rhino App.

One of our longest-standing Rhino users, businesswoman Beth Turner, represented small business owners in a direct involvement with the HMRC Making Tax Digital initiative. She helped to drive the development of the MTD platform’s compatibility with business apps. Using Rhino, Beth became the first person to submit an annual return digitally to the MTD pilot project in June 2017, and again to the Live MTD system in March 2018. Beth was also invited to Whitehall to brief the Admin Burdens Advisory Board (ABAB) and the Customer Experience Working Group (CEWG) in November 2017.
With all that close collaboration, you can see why Rhino is compatible with MTD – and why HMRC was happy to approve the Rhino App as the first to provide direct MTD access for business owners.
